Deep Purple is set to embark on a gigantic tour in 2017 that will be complimented by the talents of the great Alice Cooper. While millions of rock ‘n roll fans throughout North America consider themselves very savvy about the genre that was initially defined in 1960 and redefined throughout the following two decades, the group Deep Purple often fades into the darkness when it comes to accounting for and paying respect to the true greats of the industry. Here’s five legit reasons why the incredibly talented and important group from Hertfordshire, England should finally receive the recognition they deserve.
Deep Purple’s first tour took place in 1968. It was followed by their second tour, later in 1968. Their third tour began in the final months of 1968 and extended into the first months of 1969. By the time 1975 rolled around, the band had toured exactly 11 times since their initial formation seven years prior.
In the modern era (since that calendar turned to the 21st century) the group has embarked on a tour seven times leading up to The Long Goodbye Tour, which will be their eighth romp in the modern millennium.
Deep Purple has released a total of 19 studio albums, nearly 40 live albums, well over 20 compilation albums and a total of 15 video albums.
They rose to prominence during a time in which producers and creative designers were available and ready to whip up whimsical and sometimes meaningful albums and music videos. Deep Purple’s 2017 studio release entitled “Fireball” reached #1 on the American Billboard charts, as did their following album in 1972. It represented the final time that the group would peek at the exclusive apex of global music, but it was hardly the last time that they were ready to perform their hits in front of audiences.

The somewhat hilarious and totally memorable phrase was initially coined by a popular music magazine in the 1980’s in order to reference the three greatest British alternative rock bands who initially debuted in the 1970’s. This unofficial trio includes Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. The distinction has been a nice conversation piece for fans of Deep Purple, and perhaps a bit of a proclamation that they – by no measure other than chance – missed the proverbial wave of British greatness while paying attention to the smoke on the water.
Smoke On the Water
When Deep Purple released the album “Machine Head” in May 1973, they could not have possibly imagined that the B-side song Smoke on the Water would ultimately become the signature track for the band initially formed in Hertfordshire, England in the late-60’s.
The collection of powerful and resonating notes that are laid down the initial moments of the song are a signature riff that true fans recognize immediately. The poetic and whimsical rock ‘n roll ballad was the centerpiece of Deep Purples creative existence, and for good reason. According to a wide array of rock ‘n roll experts and critics, the song is among the Top-20 produced throughout the glorious 1970’s.
