Making of a Legend

Born John Roger Stephens, John Legend’s career has sky rocketed and has made his stage name to become one that is known all across the world. Legend started his career when he began to hold shows around Philadelphia before expanding to New York, Boston, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. After graduating from college in 1999, he began producing, writing, and recording his own music and released two albums independently. He released his self-titled album in 2000 and in 2001 Live at Jimmy’s Uptown which he began selling at his shows.

In 2001, Legend was introduced to then up-and-coming hip-hop artists Kanye West who singed Legend who was to sing during the hooks of West’s music. In 2004, the debut album Get Lifted was released and featured production by Kanye West, Dave Tozer, and will.i.am. The album debuted at number 7 on the US Billboard 200 and sold 116,000 copies in its first week and was later certified gold by the RIAA. The album won Legend the 2006 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.

Legend has since released four other albums including 2016’s Darkness and Light which he is currently getting ready to embark on a new tour to celebrate. The album features appearances from Chance the Rapper, Brittany Howard, and Miguel. The album includes singles “Love Me Now” and “Penthouse Floor” featuring Chance the Rapper.
