Boston is a highly-successful band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1976 by the talented and focused Tom Scholz. Their initial, self-entitled album peaked at #3 on the US charts, a clear indication to Scholz and his bandmembers that what they had created had some legs to it. After a studio release in 1978 that hit #1 on the American charts, they took a full eight years off before releasing their third studio album, which also hit the top slot on the Billboard rankings.
They’ve released three studio albums since, and Scholz has continued to be the driving force behind the band that will be touring the United States this summer. Here are three interesting facts about the 69-year-old born in Toledo, Ohio in the late 1940s.
A True Perfectionist
As a young musician, Scholz gained a reputation for being an absolute perfectionist as it pertains to putting together his music. Likely as a result of his background in mechanical engineering, Scholz gained a special understanding of how all the equipment that went into recording demos worked. He created a home studio in the early-70s where he tinkered endlessly on some of the tracks that would become major songs for Boston in later years.
His need to refine and re-refine his music was a constant source of conflict with his record company, who demanded that Boston crank out music as quickly as possible in order to keep their brand relevant and everyone’s pockets fat. Scholz inherently disagreed with that approach to making music, and it led to a few large hiatuses for Boston while they were very much at the top of their game.
Hard Core Vegetarian
A vegetarian since the mid-1980s, Scholz has worked extensively with charitable global causes, such as the movement to end world hunger and create animal protection. More locally, he has worked directly with homeless shelters, food banks and animal rescue sanctuaries.
A lot of truly great musicians from Scholz’s era can play a few instruments well, but he can do any of five things on the stage at any given time. He masterfully plays the guitar, the bass guitar and the keyboard. Additionally, he’s prepared to hop behind the drums and bang out songs during any given concert. Perhaps most recognizably, he is the primary vocal force behind the group that will be touring from late-April to mid-August.
