2017 Sugar Bowl Pitts Big-12 Perennial Contender against SEC Perennial Contender

In the first time in recent memory, college football games will not be played on New Year’s Day. The first day of 2017 will belong to the NFL, but the second will feature four huge matchups. The biggest is arguably the Sugar Bowl, squaring off the Auburn Tigers against the Oklahoma Sooners. Make sure to get tickets for the game at TicketProcess.com.

Oklahoma Sooners vs Oklahoma State Cowboys

Off-the-field shockwaves circuited through the Oklahoma fan base recently with the release of a graphic videotape detailing an assault on a female committed by running back Joe Mixon. It is as of yet unclear if there is going to be any further fallout regarding the actions of Mixon leading up to this highly-anticipated showdown.
Mixon was a dominant force in the Sooners backfield this year as a sophomore, rushing for nearly 1200 yards and eight touchdowns and catching 32 passes for 449 yards and five more scores.
Oklahoma is a two-loss squad that suffered both setbacks in the month of September. Three weeks into the season, there were actually rumors that longtime head coach Bob Stoops could be in jeopardy of losing his job, but the talented leader rattled off nine consecutive victories to conclude the season.
The squad knocked off their interstate rivals the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the first Saturday of December by a score of 38-20. Throughout the course of their nine-game winning streak only one team – Texas Christian – came within four points. As a result Oklahoma has not been battle-tested late into a game in a couple months.
Oklahoma will lean on their 3rd-overall ranked offense, highlighted by their 11th-overall ranked passing attack in all of college football. The Auburn Tigers are plenty tired of hearing about how great the Alabama Crimson Tide squad is, and they can help stake a claim that the SEC is indeed strong this year with a victory over the Sooners.
The Tigers fell 30-12 to Bama in the final week of the season, and they also lost games against Georgia, Texas A&M and Clemson. As if a run through the SEC conference schedule is not tough enough, they actually scheduled Clemson as a non-conference opponent to start the season.
But aside from the Crimson Tide game, all of Auburn’s losses have been close games. They are a balanced attack, bringing the nation’s 20th overall ranked defense into the game, highlighted by the 21st overall ranked defense against the rush.
Somewhat surprisingly, the oddsmakers in Las Vegas have Oklahoma as just a three-point favorite over the Tigers, something fans confident in the abilities of the Sooners may want to look into further if they happen to be visiting Sin City soon.
